Yarr!!! It be Friday!

Welcome to International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Yah Harr! Yo Ho! ......and
some really bad eggs.

Yesterday, though, was a lot of knees up running about behaviour, just like
that silly Arthur King and his Knnnnnniggits - they needed pirates, too! So
maybe I should have quoted Time Bandits..

So this week has been another one in the annals of work necessary to kill
the soul (or lack thereof). Yes I'm at the office, but there has been
precious little for me to do apart from imaging about 50 more PCs. This is
obviously a tax on my brain, as I can feel it filling up with rust as I sit
here.

Mind you, last night was more interesting. Getting delivery of (what
amounted to) a BAD set of accessories for my ensemble for <b><a
href="http://www.gangstersball.com.au">The Gangster's Ball</a></b>, so <lj
user="arby_doll"> and I had a wander up to The Costume Shop in Surry Hills
to get ones which weren't an insult, and some for her too. This was followed
by a jaunt into the city to get her some two-tone shoes which were not in
stock in Myer City (though they were in Blacktown apparently). Running into
Michelle (my ex-colleague from Sydney Uni) who was frantically running
around the shoe department trying to find boots for retail therapy (ahhh
things at Sydney Uni haven't changed I see ;)) - at least we had a few
moments to have a catch-up. A wander through QVB found the same shoes that
Barbs was looking for - and I know that they are cool, because later, when
making the transit through home, <lj user="agent_beckles"> went apesh!t over
them and I really like them too.

So a quick transit, lassoing <lj user="agent_beckles"> and <lj
user="combicritter"> and we headed into Gold Class to see the latest outing
from Pixar Studios. <b><a
href="http://www.greaterunion.com.au/movies/wall-e/index.asp">"Wall.E"</a></
b>.

I was a little concerned after hearing some negative reviews of the film
earlier in the day, but so far Pixar haven't steered me wrong, and I was SO
pleased to see it in Gold Class as well. The animation has become of a
quality that I expect as 'normal' now, yet the rendering of certain things
has continued to progress. There is now some seriously excellent smoke, dust
and could rendering which almost makes me gasp. However, back to the
story... Well I'm not going to go into the story in detail (duh!) as the
studios have already released what you need to know about the film in the
trailers and previews. Suffice to say that Wall.E is everything they say it
is and more. A very well told, sweet story, which has some pathos, a lot of
humour and a couple of hidden surprises. Don't get me wrong, this is not
simply a kids film, either. It addresses issues which are topical, and
blindsides you with a few little home-truths. <lj-cut text="Spoilers
ahead">Sure, I was VERY impressed with the art, but moreso with the skillful
execution of a straightforward story and it's subtext. The sweet sadness in
the solitude of the lone surviving member of a constructed race whose
directive is to clean up after the stupid wasteful mess of his constructors.
We instantly accept that he has developed sentience after his solitary vigil
over 700 years (even as his compatriots have all sputtered and died, leaving
Wall.E with an endless supply of spare parts). His unlikely friendship with
the only living survivor on the planet - a cockroach which NOTHING can kill
is wonderfully written, and very skillfully underplayed. This is perhaps one
of the best button-pushing films from the Pixar stable, and push buttons it
does. It makes you react to situations because you thoroughly invest in
their characters. When Wall.E meets Eve (sent to scan for returning life on
earth) his loneliness is even more palpable as he has someone to relate to
who doesn't relate to him. His discovery of something which will alter his
'life' forever, Eve's mission, and the surprisingly obese fate of the human
race (which becomes Eve and Wall.E's new directive to change) makes up the
bulk of the second half of the film, along with the unfolding of the sweet
platonic romance between them. As I said, it pushes buttons and toward the
end of the film children (and some adults) will cry.</lj-cut> I seriously
liked it and more than seriously recommend it for what it is; Pixar at it's
best, delivering excellent light entertainment with a good message, and not
delivered clumsily or ham-fistedly.

So, here I sit in the office... Somewhat bored now, though they pay me to
'be on call' so there's no harm in that I guess. I think what I have to do
is do some more of my course homework (which is due by December 20).
Tomorrow I have my last 5 modules to do - and participate in my practical
exam, along with my book-exam. Then I follow that with getting a certificate
(there? Or in the mail? I have no idea) and making the call to the Attorney
General's Department to get my 'Fit & Proper Person' application. Then I
wait - about 3 months I believe - and then - well, we'll see ;)

ANYWAY - tonight I would like to get to Hellfire to say "Congratulations!"
to Master Tom and Ultra whom have both jetted back from the wilds of Las
Vegas - although that will be an early night as I am back at the course
tomorrow morning at 9 in Crows Nest. Tomorrow night I am at The Gangster's
Ball, and I'm quite looking forward to it (remember, <lj user="pornofairy">,
you have to be there EARLY!). Sunday will be... err... An extension of
Saturday - and that is all I can predict.

Ah well, back to the grind of ... er... Homework? Roll on 2:30pm! Early
afternoon indeed :)
