5 weeks ago I left Sydney University, due to the new CIO downsizing our Project Specialist Team (for that matter, they haven't been able to get any contractor extra help recently, and are somewhat swamped with work so much that they are under a huge amount of stress).
Anyway, I immediately applied for Project work (Security/IT) with World Youth Day, as some people (looking at you <lj user="missdissent">) can vouch for. Suffice to say that the interview was remarkably positive, the comments reflected a definite desire to have me on the team, due to my events experience, especially with APEC.
Here is an except of the email I received this afternoon, after 5 weeks of being assured that I had a position and that an offer was forthcoming "...this Friday" (every week for 5 weeks):

Subject: Working For World Youth Day 2008
On behalf of World Youth Day 2008 I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in applying to work during the week of Events in July.
WYD08 has been inundated with applications for employment and due to the intense interest in positions I am sorry to inform you that at this time your application has been unsuccessful.
The standard and calibre of all applications for all candidates has been outstanding.
I apologise for the delay in replying and thank you for your patience.
On behalf of World Youth Day 2008 we would like to wish you all the best for the future.
Yours sincerely
The Workforce Team
My reply:
Good Afternoon,
Thank you for forwarding this email on to me.
As mentioned earlier, I am very disappointed with, and somewhat angered by this last minute decision, which is at odds with all other information I have received from your organisation. Moreso, I feel that I have been treated very very poorly in the entire process, having been assured that I would be contacted every week (for 5 weeks) and no contact being forthcoming (something that I know you are aware of). Also, having had discussions with both yourself and with Xxxx and being advised at the time (in fact, in as many words) that I was required/wanted, but HR was to "make the offer by Friday", every Friday for 5 weeks. ... As you mentioned to me on the phone this afternoon, this indeed has "been a debacle, and very poorly organised" (from this employment front).
I wish you all the best with the event, hoping that the rest of the organisation has not been arranged in the same manner in which I have been treated. Thank you, at least, for your positive efforts.
Regretfully
