The countdown to G'Day happened, and St Mary's Cathedral went off like a
frog in a sock... Or is that an annoying thing to say?
This morning, the city is full of singing and praising Catholics. It's quite
a sight to see, and the opverall feeling is one of an 'electric'
happiness... And of course, us 'radicals' are being careful to not confront
any of the pilgrims with anything bad, including my annoying Orstraylyan
accent, or heathern Pagan symbols, I am left to wonder... Where are the
NON-Catholic religious people in this 'World' Youth Day? This IS touted as
'World' Youth Day, yes? (brings out the inner Ramsay in me, I swear). Well
then if it's only for Catholic Pilgrims, shouldn't it be World Catholic
Youth Day? If not, then why aren't there many of other faiths represented?
No Presbyterians, Unitarians, Ba'hai, Hare Krishna, Pagan, Wiccan, Jewish,
Khabbalist, Baptist, Uniting Church, Methodist, Church of Gay Unity, Mormon,
etc... Am I to think that we are shutting the city down (well the CBD
anyway) for ONE organised faith? The one organised faith which has done more
harm (historically speaking) than any other? Now, I have nothing against the
celebration, as we all know I LOVE events, but I find this to be a little
bit exclusionist. What were the arguments for and in which case (being
montheistic) what is it's payoff to Sydney and the local population (which
is NOT overwhelmingly Catholic)? The raison d'être for World Youth Day (in
this respect) somewhat escapes me.
While I am all for religious ferver, as those who were involved in
Theatresports with me will attest, I take umbrage at those who pour out of
railway stations and scream "Prasie God!" in my face. It wasn't an
exhortation, it was a demand... That was.... Er.. Annoying. Where's their
fine? I would get one for a T-Shirt, they're confrontational and get a
blessing. Somethings screwy in Macquarie Street. Again.
