It's Thursday, and it's still raining. This is a good thing (allegedly) for the water-hungry Spring(?) climate, and the all-too parched land. However, it is playing merry hell with my wanting to go to Shakespeare In The Park with ctrlshft. We've been rained out twice so far - last time being last Tuesday and again today. Last Tuesday we at least went to Fujiya for a worthwhile meal, but today... well perhaps we should look at an inside theatre experience for sometime this coming week - I hear that Bell Shakespeare is doing The Government Inspector... wonder if there are seats still? It finishes on the 24th of November. You know, one of the things that bothers me about this season of Shakespeare In The Park is that they do not give you refunds for rained-out days. Which I think is remarkably unfair - and one which I have emailed the company about. However, at least the Producer and I are on first-name terms - and he can get me tix for anytime when Moshtix is closed (which is between 5pm-9am - WTF?).
The last few days have been simply filled with work and working out, and the odd going out in the evening. No real weight loss from the workouts, at the moment, but that's OK - there's little I can do with this stupid muscle recovering. At least I am doing something, and not just dieting. As I was saying before - Lite N Easy will be what I am looking at for the moment, I think. It'll bring that cholesterol down somewhat as well. Note to self: find a place which does Bagels and Lite Cream Cheese in the mornings - and stay the hell away from the muffins! They are way too fattening!
So my boss (supervisor), who projects the opinion that if you're in the office and there's nothing to do you may have to find something even cleaning, is having a week or so off - because his wife gave birth at 5am yesterday morning. Now this is actually a nice thing because he has seemed to be quite chuffed about his impending fatherhood. Unfortunately for the jumping and squee-ing crowd here, I haven't really shared the excitement (possibly because I've only just stated at this location, or I just have no emotional stake in the fatherhood thing - at this stage). Still, this means that we can get on with the business of doing the jobs and so forth in the queue, and when they are done simply futz about doing what we want to do (with no detriment to work schedules or attitude) - I think that's the sign of being 'mature' in your work ethic. You know the job, you do the job well, and you then get to do what you want around the job.
Last night was Goth City, which had an OK attendance. Obviously not the amount of last week, but the rain 'helped' in that regard. Still, there were quite a few people and I spent some time having chats with a few people about what may/may not work in having a mid-week 'club' at a 'local RSL' (not to mention having dinner with kanika and _blooblu_, and an early visit from Gill [who got out of work early and came up to say "Hi.":)]). The RSL is a tough sell for many reasons (a 'school-night' being foremost in the Sydney mindset) and I think what you really need is something that the original Black Planet(?) (correct me if I am wrong) had. On Enmore Rd there is a paint store just next to Polymorph. As memory serves, and moreso thanks to matt_hell's memory, this was The Dispensary Cafe. This used to be a Cafe/restaurant-type place (I first met v3nu5 there actually, which was dingy enough to have real atmosphere, it served food, booze, and had bands/DJs and at times even performances and plays. Also, specific bands/DJs which played there during club nights. I think that's the sort of thing which is needed for a mid-week venue. A place which serves food, has a dearth of pokies (they are just plain annoying), serves coffee, serves alcohol, has a stage-area for bands/acts, and has atmosphere. The funny thing is that @ Newtown covers most of these points (except for the 'atmosphere' and the 'dearth of pokies') - I think perhaps that if they ditched the pokies on Level 1 (or turned them off) and maybe put in a pool-table or two it might attract more people. Not to mention the drink prices could be adjusted. Still, at the end of the day - it does cover most of the bases. The change in Liquor Laws will help in opening up more of these 'wine-bars' and perhaps opening up more venues for 'day-to-day' clubs (as opposed to the once-a-week 'big' nights) - and those venues may well be looking for more nights as well, so it may re-invigorate the ntir'club' scene here. Just thinking out loud here. Still, it was a night of good people, and good talks with a large number of them, and very happily, a surprisingly good connection with someone. It's funny, but sometimes commonality with people can be more than just a nice happenstance. Still, I stayed longer than I though I would (due to certain good company and conversation) and then cabbed off home for a quick Skype with lolife, In London, and then to bed (Gods, that almost sounded like a Samuel Pepys excerpt).
barbarianplates degustation bookings have been confirmed - all updated and ready for the last Friday of this month; booked for a couple of things during the Sydney festival - and put those events on my Facebook list of events. and I'm just about to update eventsinsydney.
So, due to today's rain, there will be no Shakespeare tonight, rather perhaps a trip to the Cinematograph, or catching up with some things at home. I mean, I have foods in the house, some DVDs to catch up on, and really don't need another night (in a row) out eating and drinking too much money ;)
