Election We Had To Have', people are nursing heads the size of
watermelons for various reasons, either celebration or
commiseration-based. I have not seen/heard such an outpouring of
celebration since watching the announcement that Sydney won the right to
host the 2000 Olympic Games (yes THAT long ago). My only comment (here)
about the election results is that one party had a substantive Arts
Package, and the other had none. Of course I am happy that the Party
with the Arts package won - it simply means that there will be more
artistic development in this country and that cannot be a bad thing by
any stretch of the imagination. Perhaps more films will be made here
(like the upcoming live-action Justice League (with Megan Gale as Wonder
Woman?). As far as the rest of the pre-election promises are concerned?
Well, let's just wait until the dust settles OK?
Friday night I went to the 34b Burlesque 2nd Birthday, with Ernie and
Ruby (sadly missing Mandi as I think she had to work) and was very
impressed with the acts. The logic of moving from room-to-room initially
escaped me but it ensured that people could get to see a number of acts
without hogging seats - well that was the original intent I am sure, but
people left friends to mind them - so in the end all the good positions
were snaffled early on and kept. Still, the 'main room' stage was easy
to see, and the acts were more than excellent. I was originally
horrified by the Kenny impersonator Rogers (calling himself Renny
Kodgers) MC-ing the main room... but he quickly grew on me, and by the
middle of the night I was simply impressed :) There were a myriad of
cameras recording the proceedings and so I am sure tons of footage will
be available for those who missed it.
Saturday was - well that 'Election We Had To Have' and the myriad of
parties which surrounded the election which spontaneously bust into the
streets and became street parties - quite astonishing, really, and you
could feel (in areas of Sydney) a collective weight lift from people's
shoulders as the outgoing PM made his concession speech. Many thanks to
Jackie & Craig at Club Norton (first time I'd seen your place) for the
invitation and I had a great time :) Sorry I got called away just as the
spa-ing started :( I am sure I missed out on a great coda to the
evenings announcements :(
Sunday was the big sleep-in and wake-up to do some cleaning whilst
watching the inaugural Sydney Christmas Parade. Oh. My. Gods! Could they
have had any worse hosts? Perhaps it was a lack of live-event hosting
experience, but seriously folks, get better hosts nest time please -
Julia Morris was left to pretty much run it from the street whilst the
'hosts' slowly sank in the "we're too inexperienced without a script so
what the hell are we supposed to do" miasma they created for themselves
- and please get better rotating 'guest' hosts. Could I do better? Hell
Yes.
It's a bit of a busy week for me, this week, though...
The original 1960's Star Trek pilot (called The Cage) was reused and
re-cut as a 2-parter called 'The Menagerie' and is being used across the
world as a launching pad for launching the new re-tooled original Star
Trek. They've re-recorded all the music, and had all the special effects
redone with modern technology, so I guess I get to see if it's worth
buying the 'HD-TREK' when it comes out next month, besides the Orpheum
is a really nice cinema :). I'm also looking forward to the Night Of
Horror on Saturday night - right before heading over to Ascension -
although I am wondering if I will be awake enough to go to most of La
Femme (at The Annandale Hotel) on Sunday - it's a day of female-fronted
bands and entertainment and I am surprised and wondering why
MzAnnThropik is not on the bill.
Still... The only thing that's a bit sad is that I will miss My Chemical
Romance on Thursday - but that's what happens when you work APEC and
miss the ticket launch... something I will NOT miss when HIM goes
onsale.
