Congratulations to Steph and Nat and all the others involved in putting on
such a good night. The Cabaret went pretty damned smoothly, especially since
it was sold out, and people were being turned away at the door in droves. It
was a good night and it had something for everyone. (In no particular
order...)
The MC was a riot... I wasn't sure, but I initially thought it was my old
housemate Mistress Felina, but not it wasn't. Still, she was vampish enough
and her 'Booberella' accent was great (even if it er... became something
else during the fashion parade).
<b><a href="http://www.myspace.com/kisskillcabaret">Kiss Kill
Cabaret</a></b> were just bleeding fantastic, probably the best I have seen
them be. Yes I know that this was a different take on what they do
noprmally, but it was stunningly good. <b><a
href="http://www.bonedaddydesign.com/surgicalsideshow/index.html">The
Surgical Sideshow</a></b> (I swear) is getting better and better (it's a
rare set of performers who can move from cerebral ironic vocal comedy to
classic silent movie thinking-persons slapstick, and these guys do it very
well) I can see big things for these guys in the future, though some
low-brows will never get what they are doing, and that's the low-brows'
problem.
"Staple-boy" (Huw from <b><a
href="http://www.circusoc.com/">CircuSoc</a></b>) was a lot of fun and the
encore was brilliant (Ronan I think the word you're looking for is
'kangaroo-coin-purse' ) - and the cameo in the costume competition was very
funny. The costume competition was quite good, and some people went to a LOT
of trouble and a lot of effort and (some not so much) - I definitely have my
own opinion as to who should have won.
<b><a href="http://www.myspace.com/katiekiss">Vesper White</a></b> was just
great! and congrats to her for working with Peaches tonight (as the new
dancer), I first saw her performing at Hellfire, and she's just gone forward
leaps and bopunds from there. <b><a
href="http://www.underthebluemoon.org.au/images/performers/monsters%20a%20go
%20go.jpg">Monsters-A-Go-Go</a></b> is always a treat and I just loved the
balloon-dance as well :) I hope the feathers came out of the hair ;)
I also have to applaud the inclusion of <b><a
href="http://www.myspace.com/fancy_piece">Fancy Piece</a></b>, performing
two of their most excellent routines from Hellfire/Pellfire this year. Both
were edgy, both were in your face, and they was absolutely the right thing
to have. Both shows pushed boundaries but didn't insult, and weren't (IMO)
over the top. Both of their shows were great... actually they were just
spectacular.
I also applaud the inclusion of the short horror films as 'padding' and
fillers. Dean (from the <b><a href="http://www.anightofhorror.com/">A Night
Of Horror Short Film Festival</a></b>) runs a good show, the films included
last night were right on the money. (I'm seriously looking forward to more
excellence in 2009 from that Film Festival (note-to-self: buy Festival Fiend
Pass as soon as I get my next contract)).
OK, If I had one criticism it would be the speed of the food service, it was
slow, and people got served out of order...but let's face it, it wasn't
super-slow, they made it a point to let us know they were snowed under, they
did have (unxpectedly for them) a full house, the food was very tasty, and
the portions were huge.
<b><a
href="http://www.entertainoz.com.au/listingImages/140/681_42349.jpg">Julia
Madotti</a></b> and, the final act, <b><a
href="http://www.adammada.com/">Adamada</a></b> gave an excellent splash of
performance magic to the night, Julia was nice and light-hearted and
performed very well (I hadn't seen her before). The people who left early
before Adamada missed out big time, because he was excellent as always,and
the people who stayed really appreciated it. Again, hearty congratulations
to all the performers and the orgasnisers and you can put me down for 2
tickets for the next one right now.
PS: I'll have pics up sometime later this afternoon (before heading out to
Lunamorph) through Facecrack.
